About Cathleen Toelke
Detail, The Penmark, ęCathleen Toelke

Cathleen Toelke has been a freelance artist since 1980. By 1983, she had developed a unique style with strong design elements, dramatic light, and in particular, a population of figures recognizable by the figures' stylized, sculptural qualities. In 1984, her work received the first of regular recognitions in the major juried illustration and design annuals, and she has been profiled in Print, Communication Arts, and American Artist/Watercolor magazines. She is known for her editorial paintings on bookcovers, especially many symbolic, and emotionally charged ones for celebrated authors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez (One Hundred Years of Solitude), Oscar Hiluelos (The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love), Laura Esquivel (Like Water for Chocolate), and Sharon Creech (Walk Two Moons). A favorite project is a mural sized oil painting for the lobby and advertising of Millennium/The Premier hotel, Times Square. Clients include Simon & Schuster, Random House, Penquin, Harper Collins, Millennium Hotels and Resorts, New York University, Fast Company, GQ, and Levi's. Toelke has been a guest speaker at the Society of Illustrators, Rhode Island School of Design, Savanna College of Art and Design, Illustration Conference (ICON), AIGA Minneapolis, Syracuse University, Norman Rockwell Museum, Rochester Instititute of Technology, Parsons School of Design, New School, and others.
